Kingstown: 30-year port concession awarded to GPH
04/11/2026
Contract signed, operations set to begin in 2027
Global Ports Holding (GPH) announced on October 28, 2026, that it had signed a 30-year concession agreement with the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The agreement was signed two days earlier, on October 26, at the Kingstown Cruise Ship Berth. Kingstown is the capital and main port of the island nation.
The agreement covers the development and operation of the cruise port. It builds on a letter of intent from June 2026. GPH expects to begin operations in the first quarter of 2027, once the preconditions set out in the concession agreement have been met. For travelers, the announcement signals an upcoming change of operator with a long-term development mandate. Its effects are expected to become visible gradually, starting with the operational launch and continuing through subsequent expansion.
Multi-phase expansion planned
GPH plans to modernize port infrastructure and expand berth capacity so that larger cruise ships can dock. It also aims to improve the experience for arriving visitors. The company describes a multi-phase investment program that brings together the pier, ship handling and passenger services.
The development mandate also includes new opportunities for shore excursions. GPH plans to work with the government and local stakeholders, and to involve local businesses. The port agreement thus links expansion at the pier with the range of offerings on shore. For Kingstown and the island communities, a key measure will be how these local partnerships translate into bookable excursions and revenue for businesses.
GPH expects more than 250,000 cruise passengers
For the 2026/27 cruise season, GPH expects more than 250,000 passengers in St. Vincent. This is the company’s stated forecast for the season. It indicates the expected scale of cruise traffic as the new operator begins its development mandate.
For travel planning, the announcement provides two key dates: a passenger forecast for the 2026/27 season and GPH’s planned, conditional start of operations in the first quarter of 2027. Over the longer term, the program aims to increase berth capacity and expand the range of shore excursions. The local economic benefits will depend on how the announced collaboration brings local businesses into excursions and other offerings. The combination of a seasonal forecast, a change of operator and a multi-year expansion makes Kingstown a long-term port project in the southern Caribbean.
