Oceania Insignia to become Alvara for Phoenix
04/11/2026
Phoenix Reisen plans to deploy Insignia, currently sailing for Oceania Cruises, as MS Alvara from November 2027. The tour operator unveiled the addition on October 22, 2026. It is an existing ship, built in 1998. A shipyard stay in Bremerhaven is planned for September 2027; the naming ceremony is scheduled to take place in Hamburg on November 26, 2027.
First voyages already announced for booking
Phoenix announced that Alvara voyages would be available to book online from October 23, 2026. The first program presented includes short breaks, Christmas cruises and Mediterranean voyages. The new brand is therefore already linked to cruise offerings, although the ship itself is not scheduled to enter service until the following year. For guests, the start of booking and the start of a voyage are two different points in time: the program can be selected in advance, even though the shipyard preparations are not due to take place until 2027.
The different types of voyage give the first season several focal points. Short breaks offer a shorter stay on board; Christmas cruises are tied to the holiday period, while Mediterranean voyages open up a distinct cruising region. When comparing options, the relevant factors are therefore the dates, duration and announced destinations of each voyage. The ship’s unveiling and the opening of bookings set the framework for the departures to come.
Preparations at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven
For the September 2027 stay at Lloyd Werft, Phoenix has announced a new paint job and modifications. This work is scheduled to take place before the ship enters service in November. The tour operator describes the preparations for an existing ship to begin its new program. The technical and spatial foundation remains the hull of the former Insignia.
Phoenix says Alvara will carry around 700 guests, with BSM and sea chefs as partners. The guest capacity gives an indication of the scale of the planned offering. It is a company figure for Phoenix’s operation of the ship. For anyone comparing this voyage with other offerings, it provides a sense of the intended passenger capacity alongside the dates.
Naming ceremony in Hamburg in November 2027
The naming ceremony is scheduled for November 26, 2027, in Hamburg. It falls in the announced first month of service and follows the shipyard stay. Phoenix is introducing the ship to its ocean-going program under its new name; until this changeover, the former Insignia remains part of Oceania Cruises’ fleet.
For guests, the change of name goes hand in hand with a change of tour operator and program. For an Alvara voyage from November 2027, bookings and the announced itinerary refer to Phoenix’s offering. The present-day Insignia and the future Alvara are the same ship in successive periods of service.
