SHIP OVERVIEW
Nieuw Statendam is a Pinnacle Class cruise ship operated by Holland America Line, a brand with roots in Rotterdam. It was built for ocean cruising. The Fincantieri shipyard presented the vessel in Marghera in November 2018; it was the second ship in the class. At the time of delivery, Holland America stated that it could accommodate 2,666 guests in 1,377 guest accommodations. The ship combines contemporary interior design with a theme woven throughout several public spaces: music.
According to the shipyard, the design of the public spaces draws on the “architecture of music.” Holland America also describes the design language as inspired by the flowing lines of musical instruments. The musical theme is therefore more than just a concept; it is part of the ship’s spatial design.
Accommodation options range from veranda staterooms to the Pinnacle Suite. The cruise line describes the suite as measuring around 120 square meters (1,290 square feet) and accommodating up to four guests. Its features include floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a private veranda, and living, dining, and dressing areas. A whirlpool bath, separate shower, and double sinks complete the bathroom. Suite guests also receive access to the Neptune Lounge, a personal concierge, and priority check-in.
When the ship was introduced in 2018, Holland America highlighted the variety of dining venues. Tamarind was announced as a Pan-Asian restaurant with an outdoor area, while Nami Sushi was presented as a sushi offering within Tamarind. Pinnacle Grill adds a specialty restaurant to the mix, while Canaletto focuses on Italian dishes designed for sharing. The Grand Dutch Café centers on Dutch coffee and pastries. Dive-In serves burgers and fries by the pool, while New York Deli & Pizza offers sandwiches and pizza. Lido Market organizes its buffet into a variety of themed stations.
The entertainment program at the time of the ship’s debut also catered to a variety of musical tastes. The original Music Walk concept featured classic rock at Rolling Stone Rock Room, chamber music at Lincoln Center Stage, familiar songs at Billboard Onboard, and blues at B.B. King’s Blues Club. At the World Stage, large-scale LED projections were used for shows. Holland America’s current ship page continues to highlight live rhythm and blues, familiar hits, music trivia, sing-alongs, and elaborate stage productions as onboard entertainment experiences.
