SHIP OVERVIEW
The Norwegian Jewel (IMO 9304045) is the first of four Jewel-class ships. MEYER WERFT in Papenburg built the class for Norwegian Cruise Line; the ships were delivered between 2005 and 2007. NCL lists 2005 as the Norwegian Jewel’s year of construction. The ship sails under the flag of the Bahamas; maritime vessel database MarineLink lists Nassau as its port of registry. NCL gives the ship’s guest capacity at double occupancy as 2,368 and its crew complement as 1,069.
NCL lists the Caribbean, Northern Europe, Bermuda, Canada/New England, and the Mediterranean as Norwegian Jewel destinations. For Canada, consider adding a look at Québec City.
The two main dining rooms are Azura and Tsar’s Palace. According to NCL, both are on Deck 6 and included in the cruise fare. The Garden Café on Deck 12 offers an indoor buffet for main meals; The Great Outdoors complements the buffet with open-air dining. Topsiders Bar & Grill also serves casual grilled dishes on Deck 12. O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill is on Deck 8 and is described as a venue open around the clock.
Among its specialty restaurants, NCL lists Cagney’s Steakhouse and Moderno Churrascaria on Deck 13, Le Bistro on Deck 6, and Teppanyaki, Chin Chin, and Sushi on Deck 7. The cruise line indicates that these restaurants carry an additional charge. This distinguishes them from the main dining rooms and buffet venues listed as complimentary.
Outside of mealtimes, NCL describes bars and lounges, live entertainment, a casino, an arcade, and a spa among the ship’s offerings. The Haven Courtyard on Deck 14 includes a sundeck, pool, and hot tub, and is accessible exclusively to Haven guests.
MEYER WERFT lists the Norwegian Jewel as 294 meters long, 32.2 meters wide, and 93,502 GT. GT refers to a ship’s enclosed volume and is not a measure of weight. The shipyard classifies the Jewel class as Panamax ships: they could transit the Panama Canal before the larger locks opened in 2016. The class also includes Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Pearl, and Norwegian Gem.
