For a cruise, insurance benefits cover different situations: cancellation before the trip begins, interruption while travelling, medical treatment, and possible repatriation. Each area has its own covered events and benefit limits. The route, length of the trip, people travelling, and specific policy terms are therefore key factors when comparing plans.

Cancellation before departure and interruption during the trip

Travel cancellation insurance may cover cancellation fees if a covered event occurs before departure. Travel interruption insurance applies to events after the trip has begun and, depending on the plan, may cover additional travel costs or unused services. The covered reasons, insured persons, reimbursement limits, deadlines, and any excess specified in the policy are decisive.

When planning a cruise, getting to the port may also need to be taken into account. If you miss the embarkation time, need an extra overnight stay, or have to return home early, reimbursement depends on which costs and qualifying events are included in the plan. Packages from tour operators may combine several types of cover; individual plans can be compared by benefits and price.

Treatment at sea and repatriation

International health insurance may cover medical treatment and hospital stays abroad. Germany’s statutory health insurance does not cover repatriation to Germany. Private travel insurance plans differ in whether they provide repatriation only when medically necessary or also when it is medically advisable. Treatment on board, evacuation from the ship, and transport to a hospital are also separate benefits, with conditions set out in the policy.

In an emergency, possible exclusions, pre-existing conditions, how to contact the insurer, and any agreed excess are also relevant. Some plans require you to pay for treatment upfront, with reimbursement then based on the documents submitted. When choosing cover, it is therefore important to check which benefits apply to the insured person in each destination and how to access them.

Trip duration and personal terms

Annual policies often limit the duration of each trip abroad. Consumer information gives maximum trip lengths of six or eight weeks, depending on the plan; long-stay travel insurance may be suitable for longer trips. Extensions to a cruise or an unexpected delay may also be relevant. Exclusions for pre-existing conditions, age limits, deadlines, and documentation requirements also vary between policies.

A useful comparison matches the cover you need to the itinerary: cancellation costs before departure, treatment on shore or on board, medical transport, and benefits if the trip is interrupted.
