Shore Excursions

Compare shore excursions by meeting point, duration, included services, transfers and return time. The right plan depends on the berth and the time the ship spends in port.

Shore excursions take passengers from the port to the city, its sights or the surrounding area. Cruise operators offer organized tours for individual port calls; there are also options from local tour providers and ways to plan a shore visit independently. The scope, duration, group size, included services and price depend on the specific offer.

Organized tour or independent shore visit?

Depending on the itinerary, an organized tour combines transport, a guided visit and several stops. When planning their own visit, travelers choose their destinations and pace independently. The port stay, the distance between the port and the destination, and the time needed to return all factor into the decision. For independently booked excursions, plan the return journey and allow a sufficient buffer before the ship departs.

Before booking, compare the meeting point, duration, included services and any additional costs. When an excursion includes several stops, travel time can take up a larger part of the shore visit. Choosing a single destination near the port leaves more time to spend there. The best option depends on the port, the itinerary and personal interests.

Examples from different ports

A shore visit starts at the quay where the ship is actually docked. In Kiel, the centrally located Ostseekai differs from the more distant Ostuferhafen. In Amsterdam, ocean and river cruise berths should be distinguished; an offer with Amsterdam as its destination may also dock in IJmuiden. On Malta, cruise visits are centered on Valletta at the Grand Harbour. These differences affect how much time and what kind of transfer an excursion requires.

Use the specific itinerary to make your decision: arrival and departure times, the berth and the meeting point determine the available time. This makes it possible to compare organized excursions and independently planned shore visits using the same practical criteria.
