A yacht holiday begins with choosing the boat and the kind of trip that suits it. Sailing yachts, motor yachts and catamarans differ in their design and propulsion; for a charter, cabin layout, deck space and the planned route also matter. These details give travellers a practical basis for comparison: How many people are coming, how many berths are available, and which areas on board will be shared? A large cruise ship and a chartered boat therefore offer different ways to travel on the water.

Propulsion, cabins and deck space

Sailing yachts are powered by sails, while motor yachts use an engine. Traditional gulets from Turkey’s coastal region have evolved into motor and sailing yachts. On average, they are 70 to 80 feet long, have two masts and usually offer four to six cabins below deck. A wide stern provides space for dining together; a sun canopy offers shade, while the spacious foredeck has room to move around and sunbathe. Designs also vary by region: Bodrum gulets have a distinctive hull shape, while boatbuilders in Marmaris and Fethiye developed higher sterns to provide extra space. The gulet example shows how a charter boat’s origin and intended use shape its design.

Compare destinations and trip length

The cruising area influences the character of a trip just as much as the boat you choose. In the Mediterranean, western and eastern routes differ in their coastlines, islands and stages; the Mediterranean regions offer a variety of itineraries. Inland waterways in the Netherlands provide another option: a short canal tour in Amsterdam is quite different from a multi-day trip along rivers and lakes. The Benelux waterways range from city sightseeing cruises like these to longer routes. When comparing options, travellers can first decide on the trip length and cruising area, then match the yacht’s size, cabin layout and deck design to their plans.

A specific example from yacht history

Yachts have served a variety of purposes throughout history. The Mary was originally built for the Dutch East India Company. In 1660, the city of Amsterdam bought the ship to present to King Charles II on the restoration of the monarchy. As the first official royal yacht, the Mary carried the king on pleasure cruises and visits to the fleet. This dated example links the development of an individual vessel with its later use. Today, the term “yacht” is used for a wide range of boats, so for a charter, specific details about the boat on offer are more informative than a general size category.
