A whole day in colonial Williamsburg
During the trip to the enchanting city of Williamsburg you will hear interesting and informative stories about the Virginian peninsula and the Hampton Roads area. The reconstruction of Williamsburg in 1926 was financed by J.D. Rockefeller Jr.; the exploration of the city by archaeologists and historians is still ongoing. The walk of between 1.5 and 2 hours (actual distance of around 4-5 blocks) will take place in the company of a guide well versed in local history, who will take the participants through the past and historical events associated with this charming colonial-era city. There will then be an opportunity to discover the numerous speciality shops in Merchants Square under one's own steam. In this shopping quarter it is possible to buy high-quality clothing, gifts, jewellery, unusual quilts and much more. Lunch will be in one of the historic colonial taverns or numerous restaurants on Merchants Square.
Highlights of Norfolk
A wonderful way of getting to know the area is to take a trip through the beautiful historical district of Norfolk and the reconstructed areas. Many tourist sights can be reached on foot from the ship. E.g. Nautilus - the National Marine Center, the battleship Wisconsin, the lovely new MacArthur Center, which is home to more than 150 shops, restaurants and department stores, and the Moses Myers House, built in 1792 and still home to more than 70 per cent of its original furniture. St. Paul's church was the only building to survive the British bombardment in 1776 (a cannonball is however still embedded in the wall of the church). Of very great interest are the Chrysler Museum, which is one of the country's top 20 art museums, and the Norfolk naval base - the largest naval complex in the world, and home to more than 100,000 military personnel.
