Greenland cruises combine nature experiences with visits to coastal towns. The season generally runs from June to October; in the far north, sea ice limits access. Routes and the number of shore excursions vary considerably: expedition cruises may connect several settlements and fjords.
Between Disko Bay and the West Coast
A long-popular route runs between Ilulissat in the north and Narsarsuaq in the south, with shore excursions in other towns along the way. Those who begin or end in Kangerlussuaqstart at the end of a long, narrow fjord near the ice sheet. From there, many routes first head north into Disko Bay and on to Ilulissat. The journey may then continue south again, cross the Davis Strait to Canada, or include other destinations toward Iceland. Expedition ships and schooners sometimes take more open routes through fjords and to natural areas.
Understanding shore excursions by route and season
The landscape and encounters with local culture shape the character of a trip to Greenland. Which places are actually visited and how much time is available for a shore excursion depend on the specific itinerary.
