Galveston: A Cruise Port on an Island in Texas
Galveston lies on the Gulf Coast, separate from the city of Houston. The island is about 50 miles southeast of downtown Houston, which means cruise passengers need to plan for the trip to and from the ship as a separate leg of their journey. The local tourism organization lists I-45 as the direct road connection from Houston to the island. If you book a cruise package with airfare, don’t assume that the airfare automatically includes transportation to Galveston.
Getting to Galveston from Houston and Choosing an Airport
William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is the closest major airport. According to Visit Galveston, it is about 40 miles from Galveston, usually a 45- to 60-minute drive via I-45 South, depending on traffic. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is farther north; the road distance is about 70 miles and the drive typically takes around an hour and a half, or longer in heavy traffic. HOU therefore generally makes for a shorter trip from the airport to the port.
Getting from the Airport to the Cruise Port
For travel from the airports to Galveston, the tourism organization lists airport shuttles, rental cars, taxis, and ride services. Shared and private shuttle providers may also offer service between the airports and the island. Your choice depends on whether you plan to go directly to the ship, stay at a hotel, or make additional trips around the island. Renting a car offers flexibility for multiple stops, but also means coordinating the rental return and arrival at the cruise port.
Arriving Before Embarkation
The drive times given are typical road estimates; heavier traffic can make the trip longer. On the way to the ship, arrival, baggage claim, and onward travel to Galveston are separate legs. On the return journey, disembarkation, travel to Houston, and the connecting flight also take place one after another. Staying in Galveston before your cruise can separate the long journey from embarkation day.
Other U.S. ports with Caribbean connections include New Orleans, Tampa and Miami.
