Planning your journey to the cruise port

When planning your journey to the port, start with the latest boarding time shown in your travel documents. Work backwards from there, allowing for the journey to the terminal, luggage, transfers and possible delays. Check-in, departure and “all aboard” refer to different times; the details for your specific trip take precedence. An extra stay before the cruise can reduce time pressure on departure day.

Planning connections and buffer time

Use the current terminal address for your departure, as shown in your travel documents, when planning your journey. Larger ports have several terminals, sometimes with separate access roads. Plan your transfer from the airport, train station or car park to the correct entrance, and allow for the time needed to handle luggage and make connections. The article on the layout and functions of a cruise terminal explains the different areas of the port.

For air or rail travel, it is also important to consider which alternative would be available if you missed a connection, not just the scheduled arrival time. Allow enough time between your arrival and the latest boarding time. The guide to arrival, departure and all-aboard times explains these terms.

Separate bookings and package holidays

Flights, trains, hotels and cruises can be booked individually or as part of a package holiday. Under Section 651a of the German Civil Code (BGB), a package holiday generally requires at least two different types of travel service for the same trip. The law refers, for example, to passenger transport, accommodation and certain tourist services. Even when there are several contracts, the number of documents alone does not determine how the arrangement is classified: under certain conditions, Section 651b BGB treats a business as a tour operator if travel services are selected at a single point of sale during the same booking process before payment is due, offered at a total price, or advertised as a package holiday.

Keep your booking confirmations and the contact details of the providers involved close at hand. If you have arranged your travel to the port separately, it helps to know before setting off whom to contact first in the event of a delay. The article on arriving late at the ship covers this situation.

Before departure

  • Note down the latest boarding time and terminal address.
  • Allow for transfers, connections and the time needed to handle luggage when planning your arrival.
