Australian cruises differ mainly in the stretches of coastline and types of ports they connect. Comparing Cairns in the tropical north with Hobart in Tasmania already shows how different the shore excursions can be. The port name does not always directly match the better-known city name, either: Fremantle is the port for Perth. When choosing an itinerary, it is therefore important to consider both the order of port calls and the exact name of each port.
Comparing coastlines and itineraries
In the north, Cairns and Darwin represent different starting points: Cairns is described as a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, while Darwin is the tropical capital of the Northern Territory. On the east coast, Sydney and Brisbane are among the major city ports; farther south, Melbourne and Hobart each offer their own urban and coastal attractions. A port call in Hobart, for example, combines Tasmania with Salamanca Market and kunanyi/Mt Wellington.
It is also worth checking the exact port name on the west and south coasts. Fremantle connects Perth with its own historic centre and markets, while Adelaide represents a different southern port region.
The type of port call also varies from one destination to another. Australian port guides, for example, label ports as “Docked” or “Tender.” This designation is a separate planning consideration from the destination itself: at a tender port call, passengers go ashore by tender boat, while “Docked” means the ship calls at a quay. The port guide Cruising Down Under lists Airlie Beach and Mooloolaba as tender ports, and Cairns and Hobart as docked ports. For a specific date, the cruise line’s port-call information is authoritative.
Choose the right part of your trip
For a shorter stay, an itinerary featuring just a few ports in one coastal region can provide a clear focus. Longer cruises, by contrast, connect city destinations and natural regions across greater distances.
The specific schedule determines which of these regions can actually be reached during a shore excursion.
