Silversea is a cruise brand founded in 1994, offering luxury and expedition travel. Since 2020, it has been wholly owned by Royal Caribbean Group.
Silversea is a cruise brand offering luxury and expedition voyages. It combines traditional ocean cruises with journeys to remote regions. Its offerings include all-inclusive amenities and butler service in every suite. Silversea distinguishes between its classic fleet and dedicated expedition ships; the two complement each other with different types of travel. The brand is wholly owned by Royal Caribbean Group, but operates independently within the group. The distinction between brand, owner and ship operations is explained in the article Cruise Brand and Corporate Group.
Silversea was founded in 1994 as a joint venture between Monaco-based V-Ships Group and the Rome-based Lefebvre family. The new brand launched with an all-inclusive concept. Silver Cloud entered service in April 1994, followed by Silver Wind in 1995. From the outset, Silversea focused on ships designed and operated for its own brand.
Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper joined the fleet in 2000 and 2001. They expanded the original line of ships and offered more space for guests. In 2007, Silversea announced an expedition division and added a smaller ship for journeys to remote regions. Prince Albert II, later renamed Silver Explorer, became the starting point for this business segment. In 2012, the acquisition of Ecuadorian tour operator Canodros S.A. expanded the expedition division to include the Galápagos Islands; the ship Galapagos Explorer II was operated as Silver Galapagos. Alongside classic luxury cruising, a second pillar thus developed, focused on small groups, natural destinations and expedition expertise.
In July 2018, Royal Caribbean Group initially acquired a majority stake in Silversea. Two years later, it acquired the remaining shares and became the sole owner. Following the acquisition, Silversea became an independent brand within Royal Caribbean Group. Silversea continues to develop its profile as a cruise brand focused on luxury and expedition travel.
The offering includes classic cruises as well as expedition voyages to remote areas. Silver Endeavour was purpose-built to explore remote polar regions and sails in both the Arctic and Antarctic. The expedition ship Silver Endeavour complements Silver Cloud, which is part of the expedition fleet and uses Zodiacs and kayaks, among other equipment. Silver Moon and Silver Dawn are examples of the classic ocean-cruise segment. Silver Nova (2023) and Silver Ray (2024) introduced the Evolution class and represent the more recent development of the classic fleet.
Every suite includes butler service; the all-inclusive offering covers restaurants and premium beverages. The S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program features local food and drink, offering a way to discover the culture of each destination. It is available on Silver Moon, Silver Dawn, Silver Nova and Silver Ray, among other ships. The combination of personalized suite service, extensive included amenities and distinct fleet segments shapes the brand. When comparing a classic ocean cruise with an expedition voyage, travelers can therefore consider not only the destination and ship size, but also the type of onboard experience offered.
