Luxor and the Nile as a starting point

Luxor lies in the Nile Valley, with the river dividing it into an East Bank and a West Bank. This distinction is important for finding your way around the city: the temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor Temple stand on the East Bank, while the necropolises of ancient Thebes lie on the western side.

For travel planning, it is also important to distinguish between the city and the specific docking location. For Luxor, the operator Spring Tours lists the Gezirah Al Awameyah landing stage, in front of the Luxor Culture Palace. For a particular trip, the landing information provided by the relevant operator is authoritative.

Temples on the East Bank

Luxor Temple is located in ancient Thebes and was built primarily under Amenhotep III. Its great colonnade has two rows of seven columns each. Tutankhamun and Horemheb commissioned further decoration of the complex. Ramses II later added, among other features, the courtyard, pylon, and obelisks. One of the two obelisks has stood on the Place de la Concorde in Paris since 1836.

Karnak consists of several temple precincts. Its most striking feature is the Great Hypostyle Hall, with 134 columns: the twelve central columns reach 21 metres, while the others are 15 metres high. The Opet Festival linked the religious centres of Karnak and Luxor in a procession involving the gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. The processional route between the complexes illustrates the historical connection between these two religious centres.

River cruise and historic landscape

Nile cruises often connect Luxor with Aswan and other places along the river. The journey therefore reveals not just two cities, but a succession of archaeological landscapes in Upper Egypt. Aswan is a major destination in the south; a Nile cruise should be distinguished from a separate onward journey via Lake Nasser towards Abu Simbel. The riverbanks are dotted with a range of temples and excursion destinations that give each stage its own character.

Luxor and Aswan are among Egypt’s Nile destinations. The Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan connects the two cities. Aswan on the Nile is the southern starting point of this route.
