Croatia’s Adriatic coast is shaped by elongated islands, bays and channels. The island chains run mostly parallel to the mainland. Despite their proximity, Dalmatian port towns differ in their settings along the coast, among the islands and within their historic centres.

Island Coast and the Dalmatian Shore

Croatia’s Adriatic coastline measures 1,777 kilometres; including the island coastlines, the total is 5,835 kilometres. Off the mainland are 78 islands, 524 smaller islets and 642 reefs. Their elongated shapes generally follow the coastline. After the last Ice Age ended, sea levels rose, flooding valleys and basins. Higher-lying land remained above water as islands, with numerous sea channels forming between them. This formation continues to shape Dalmatia’s alternating stretches of mainland coast, islands and narrow waterways.

Split and Trogir are located on the mainland coast. In Split, Diocletian’s Palace, the Peristyle and the Riva waterfront promenade are concentrated in a clearly defined urban area. Trogir’s historic centre is also right on the water; island and coastal excursions depart from here. Dubrovnik has a different layout: many cruise ships dock at Gruž harbour, outside the walled Old Town. Pile Gate marks the entrance to the Old Town. The harbour and historic centre are therefore separate stops, whereas Split and Trogir’s waterfront areas are closer to their sights.

Karst and Coastal Plains

Croatia’s landscape encompasses the Pannonian Lowlands, the Dinaric Alps and the Adriatic coast. Much of the country is karst terrain: water dissolves limestone and dolomite, shaping depressions, fissures, valleys and caves. Along the Adriatic, the coastal strip is often narrow, with steep mountain slopes rising inland. Islands, coastline and hilly hinterland thus form closely neighbouring landscapes. Wider, lower-lying coastal areas can be found around Kaštela Bay and in the Neretva Delta. There, the plains open out, while elsewhere the mountains reach close to the coast. For cruise visitors, a port stop therefore connects the urban culture of the Adriatic with the changing landscapes of the mainland, island chains and the Dinaric hinterland.
