Honiara is the capital of the Solomon Islands, located on Guadalcanal. A day ashore can combine the city with sites from the Pacific War and the island’s landscapes. The best places to visit depend on whether you would rather spend the day exploring city life, history or nature: the excursions described range from central sights to longer drives across the island.
Honiara and Guadalcanal’s wartime history
The American War Memorial commemorates the Guadalcanal Campaign of World War II. Eastern and western routes take in other sites, including Red Beach, Henderson Field and Bloody Ridge; the western route also includes the Vilu open-air museum. These sites give a visit to the island a historical focus. Since they are spread across Guadalcanal, excursions vary considerably in length. For a shorter stay, a city itinerary combining memorials with central Honiara is a good option.
Markets and museums in the capital
Those who would rather stay in the city can include Point Cruz, the Central Market, and the National Museum and Art Gallery in their visit. Along with the museums, these places offer a sense of Honiara beyond its role as a starting point for visits to the battlefields. A city itinerary can also be combined with a visit to the American War Memorial.
Waterfalls, villages and island nature
Guided hikes into the island’s interior lead through forest and across streams to Mataniko or Tenaru Falls; these tours require a reasonable level of fitness. Nature and cultural excursions may include botanical gardens, Kakabona, demonstrations of basket weaving and coconut-product making, as well as time at the beach. These experiences complement the historical focus with a glimpse of everyday life and the island’s natural environment.
A separate boat trip takes you to Savo Island. The destinations described include an area known for megapodes and dolphins, as well as volcanic hot springs. The boat ride thus reaches places beyond Guadalcanal. Choose a route based on the time available and your preferred focus: the city, historical sites or nature. The Solomon Islands are in the South Pacific and are among the island destinations featured on South Pacific cruises.
