Mohács Cruise Port: Danube, Town and Busójárás

Mohács on the Danube: the town’s history, Busójárás and nature experiences in Danube-Drava National Park.

Mohács lies in southern Hungary on the right bank of the Danube. The small town is multilingual.

Mohács and the Danube-Drava region

Danube-Drava National Park protects natural areas along the rivers. The surrounding area can be explored on foot, by bicycle and on the water.

Busójárás: Mohács in carnival mode

Busójárás lasts six days and takes place in late February. Busós wear carved wooden masks and voluminous wool coats. The festival features crafts, music and processions through the town; one highlight is the arrival of Busós in rowing boats on the Danube. Later, a coffin symbolizing winter is burned in the central square. In 2009, UNESCO added the tradition to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The tradition originated with the Croatian minority in Mohács and is now embraced by people from diverse cultural backgrounds. In local groups, younger generations learn mask carving and communal festival practices. The festival thus brings together a sense of belonging to the town, cultural groups and national identity.

The town’s history at the Kanizsai Dorottya Museum

The Kanizsai Dorottya Museum was founded in 1923. It researches the history and ethnography of Mohács and the surrounding area and preserves the material and cultural heritage of Croatians, Serbs and Slovenes in Hungary. Its collections include more than 20,000 objects and written documents, 23,000 photographs and 20,000 minutes of archived audio recordings. The museum’s establishment was prompted by remembrance of the 1526 battle, archaeological finds from Roman times and the Migration Period, and interest in the area’s ethnographic diversity.
