Bratislava: Danube River Cruise Port

Bratislava’s passenger port on the Danube, the Old Town with its Town Hall Museum and St Michael’s Gate, as well as the main railway station, Nivy bus station and airport.

Bratislava’s passenger port is at Fajnorovo nábrežie 2 on the northern bank of the Danube, near the historic city centre. The Old Town Hall at Hlavné námestie 501/1 is northwest of the central port marker. The specific quay depends on the voyage.

From the Danube waterfront to the Old Town

The City History Museum is housed in the Old Town Hall. Its exhibition explores the lives of local residents from prehistoric times to the present day.

The city walls controlled access to the Danube and to the districts on the landward side of the city. By the end of the 14th century, St Michael’s Gate stood to the north, Vydrica Gate to the west and Laurinc Gate to the east. In the 15th century, Fishermen’s Gate on the southern side led to the river. In the first half of the 16th century, the fortifications were reinforced amid fears of Turkish attacks. In 1775, Maria Theresa ordered large sections of the walls to be demolished or built over. The surviving historic remains include St Michael’s Gate and a section of wall on Staromestská with the Bird Tower and Northwest Tower.

St Michael’s Gate took on its present form after several expansions in the 18th century. A time capsule dating from 1758 is embedded in the head of the statue of Archangel Michael. It contains, among other things, documents, historic currency, relics, and the names of city councillors and craftsmen. During renovations in 2023, another item selected by the public was added.

The Old Town is also closely tied to the history of coronations: from 1563 to 1830, Bratislava was the coronation city of the Kingdom of Hungary. A permanent exhibition in St Martin’s Cathedral displays relics and liturgical objects from the coronation ceremonies. A list on the cathedral wall names 19 crowned monarchs and their consorts.

Railway station, bus station and airport

Hlavná stanica, the main railway station, lies north of the Old Town. The central Mlynské Nivy bus station is east to northeast of the city centre and serves national and international routes. Its underground station opened on 30 September 2021; the entrance is on Mlynské Nivy Boulevard. Bratislava Airport (BTS) is in the Ružinov district, nine kilometres from the city centre.

Bratislava on the Danube

Bratislava and Budapest are among the port cities along the cruise river Danube. At the Bratislava landing, the gangway connects the ship to the quay.
