Bamberg: River cruise port on the Main-Danube Canal

Quai 5 at bayernhafen, Port Basin 2, in relation to the Old Town, train station, central bus station and Nuremberg Airport.

The river cruise port of Bamberg is located in bayernhafen on the Main-Danube Canal. Three cruise ship berths are located at Quai 5 in Port Basin 2; the hotel ship berth is also here. Hafenstraße 1 is the port’s mailing address. Bayernhafen assigns the quay to Main-Danube Canal kilometers 2.10 to 2.70 east.

From the port to the Old Town

Bamberg’s Old Town lies southeast of the cruise port. In the city, the Regnitz splits; the Old Town Hall stands on an island in the river at the Upper Bridge. The Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It comprises Bergstadt, Inselstadt and Gärtnerstadt, three historic urban districts, each with its own character.

In Bergstadt, notable sites are spread across Bamberg’s seven hills. They include St. Michael’s Monastery on Michelsberg and the cellars on Stephansberg.

Gärtnerstadt and World Heritage

Vegetables have been grown within the city in Gärtnerstadt since the Middle Ages. Bamberg’s market gardeners exported onion sets, seeds and, in particular, liquorice. The medieval plot layout, with its house gardens, is still visible today. This form of urban gardening is exceptional in Germany. The combination of residential life and urban gardening played a significant role in UNESCO’s designation; the gardening tradition is also part of the intangible cultural heritage.

Train station, central bus station and waterway

Bamberg train station is southeast of the port. The central bus station on Promenadestraße is between the station and the Old Town. Buses can stop near the quay. The Main-Danube Canal connects Bamberg to the European network of inland waterways.

Airport serving the region

Nuremberg Airport is southeast of Bamberg and serves as a regional passenger airport. Bamberg-Breitenau is a special airfield.
