Bernkastel-Kues: River Cruise Landing Stages, Old Town and Getting There
Bernkastel-Kues: river cruise landing stages on the Kues bank of the Moselle, the old town and Gestade on the Bernkastel side, plus the bus hub and regional train stations.
River Cruise Landing Stages on the Kues Side
Bernkastel-Kues has two documented river cruise landing stages on the Kues side of the Moselle. A press release from the Trier Administrative Court dated January 13, 2025, summarizes a ruling issued on January 6: it concerns two landing stages that replace existing mooring posts and serve river cruise ships. A local report locates them near Moselauen and Thanisch-Spitz. This places the cruise landing stages on the western, left bank of the Moselle in Kues; these sources do not identify a single fixed berth or operator.
Bernkastel, the Market Square and the Gestade
The Moselle separates the two districts: Kues lies on the west bank, and Bernkastel on the east bank. In the town, the river runs roughly north to south before curving southwest farther south. The central bridge crossing connects the two sides near the northern edge of the historic old town. The Market Square and historic town center are on the Bernkastel side, on the east bank. There is also a separate landing stage at the Gestade for seasonal Moselle sightseeing cruises. This excursion-boat landing stage near the Moselparkplatz is a different destination from the river cruise landing stages on the Kues side.
Bus Hub and Train Stations
The Kues Forum bus hub is at Forumsplatz, by the freight depot on the western side of the Moselle. The local tourism office lists nine local and regional bus routes serving it. Bernkastel-Kues itself has no passenger railway station. The visitor information lists Wittlich Hauptbahnhof and Traben-Trarbach as the nearest train stations, 14 and 23 kilometers away, respectively. The local Moselbahn train is a tourist road train, not a railway connection. This distinction helps distinguish the Kues bus station from a train station in the surrounding area.
Regional Airport
Frankfurt-Hahn is in the Hunsrück, about 35 kilometers from Bernkastel-Kues, and is the region’s airport. It is outside the Moselle towns and should not be confused with Frankfurt Airport. The code HHN distinguishes it from Frankfurt Airport.
