Groß Neuendorf: River Cruises and a Cultural Harbour on the Oder

Some Oder river cruises call at Groß Neuendorf. The former cargo harbour is now a cultural harbour with a loading tower, conveyor bridge and shore-visit attractions.

Groß Neuendorf on the Oder

Groß Neuendorf lies in the Oderbruch region on the Oder and is one of the river cruise destinations in Germany. Its cultural harbour shows how closely local history is connected with rail and shipping. The Oderbruch Railway served passenger traffic and transported goods to the harbour, where rail and water routes met. The harbour was built in 1953. As early as around 1940, there was a wooden predecessor tower and a ferry crossing to the opposite bank of the Oder. A crane track dates from 1913, and a second loading crane from 1928. The loading tower’s former interior equipment included an air tank and grain elevator. Harbour photographs show the tower in 1968 and its closure in 1973.

River cruises to Groß Neuendorf

Plantours plans to call at Groß Neuendorf on a twelve-day voyage aboard the MS Sans Souci from 4 to 15 March 2027. The planned route starts in Berlin-Tegel and travels via Lehnitz, Lichterfelde, Frankfurt an der Oder, Eisenhüttenstadt, Cigacice, Beuthen, Glogau and Maltsch to Breslau and back; Groß Neuendorf features both on the outbound journey upriver and on the return. The local landing stage also offers charter trips on the Oder, departing from the cultural harbour.

A shore visit to the cultural harbour

During a visit, the preserved harbour buildings and their current uses take centre stage. The heritage complex was renovated in 2005 by Jens Plate Architekten. The loading tower houses a café and exhibition on its lower three floors, while the upper four floors are used as holiday accommodation. The former conveyor bridge now serves as a public viewing platform. A hotel and restaurant occupy the former engine house. In this former cargo harbour, views, exhibitions and places to eat combine with visible traces of goods handling.

The protected harbour area also includes an agricultural museum and an art gallery. The former grain store is now used as the Oderlandhalle, and converted railway wagons offer overnight accommodation. Bicycle and canoe rentals, along with a skate park, round out the local leisure activities. Visitors can enjoy anything from a brief look at the quay, tower and conveyor bridge to longer stays with overnight accommodation or activities on land and water.
