Regensburg on the Danube: waterfront and Old Town

Regensburg on the Danube: cruise berths on the Danube waterfront, Donaumarkt, historic bridges, and the main railway station and ZOB on Albertstraße.

Danube waterfront and berths

Regensburg’s river cruise terminal is located on the Danube waterfront along the southern arm of the Danube. The operator, bayernhafen, lists it in the section between Danube kilometre 2379 and 2378, with berths D1 to D4 and D6 and D7. Passengers can be picked up directly at the quay by bus.

Along the southern arm of the Danube, Marc-Aurel-Ufer stretches from the Stone Bridge to the Iron Bridge. To the east, the Donaumarkt landing stage continues as far as the Nibelungen Bridge.

Donaumarkt and the Old Town

The Donaumarkt No. 5 excursion boat landing is by the Iron Bridge. One tour operator’s directions lead from the main railway station via Maximilianstraße, Alter Kornmarkt, Adolph-Kolping-Straße and Sankt-Georgen-Platz. The Stone Bridge provides a prominent historic crossing of the Danube: construction began in 1135, and its arches span around 300 metres. Until 1935, for nearly 800 years, it was Regensburg’s only reliable Danube crossing to the surrounding area. The town-side tower is the only one of the bridge’s original three towers to survive.

Railway station, ZOB and long-distance buses

The main railway station is south of the Old Town. The Central Bus Station (ZOB) is located to its north on Albertstraße. The city’s stop map distinguishes RVV stops at the main railway station, the long-distance bus area and Hauptbahnhof West from the ZOB.

Regional airports

The regional airports of Munich and Nuremberg are options for air travel.

Roman fort and World Heritage

The Old Town and Stadtamhof have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. More than a thousand individual monuments shape the character of this medieval trading city. In 2021, the Roman Danube Limes was added as a second World Heritage component.

The Roman camp of Castra Regina was established in the 2nd century AD under Emperor Marcus Aurelius on the southern bank of the Danube; the III Italic Legion was stationed here. The remains of the Porta Praetoria, the former northern gate, are built into the walls of the Bishop’s Court near St Peter’s Cathedral. Access is from Unter den Schwibbögen.

Imperial Free City and Imperial Diet

Regensburg was granted the status of a Free Imperial City in 1245. The Imperial Hall building of the Old Town Hall was initially constructed around 1320–1330 as a dance hall. From 1663, it hosted the Perpetual Imperial Diet for almost 150 years. A guided tour offers a look at the historic Imperial Hall, the Imperial Diet Museum and the original, remarkably well-preserved Fragstatt interrogation chamber.
