Saarburg: Landing, Waterfall and Old Town
The municipal boat landing at Staden, the waterfall between the Upper and Lower Town, and the location of the train and bus stations.
Saarburg has a municipal boat landing at Staden, in the old town on the right bank of the Saar. The city designates the area for hotel and passenger vessels up to 110 metres long; the landing can be booked by charter operators and shipping companies. Saar-Personen-Schifffahrt’s day trips, sightseeing cruises and scheduled services also depart right by the landing’s kiosk. So for a visit, the relevant spot is not just any stretch of the Saar’s waterfront, but the designated landing area at Staden/Ländchen.
Staden and the waterfall
Staden is Saarburg’s old town and lies on the same bank as the municipal landing. The official city map shows the landing by the Old Saar Bridge; the old town and waterfall are to its west and southwest, on the same side of the river. The waterfall is right in the heart of the city, plunging almost 18 metres between the Upper and Lower Town. This difference in elevation shapes a visit to the historic centre.
Saarburg’s Staden is one of the oldest parts of the city: it begins at the foot of the waterfall. The old town, castle complex and riverbank are all closely connected around the river. The course of the river, the Old Saar Bridge and the waterfall together help visitors find their way; the Saar is not merely a backdrop, but the defining feature alongside which both the landing and the historic town centre are located.
Train station and bus station
Saarburg train station is on the opposite bank of the Saar, southeast of the landing. The central bus station, by contrast, is on the old-town side, southwest of the centre near Heckingstraße and the B 407. The train and bus stations are therefore separate destinations and are not right next to each other. When planning your arrival or onward journey, you should allow for these two different transport hubs.
Saarburg lies in western Rhineland-Palatinate, in the Saar-Obermosel holiday region, near Trier and in the Germany–France–Luxembourg border triangle. Its regional setting connects a stay in Saarburg with the landscapes along the Saar and Moselle.
