Wertheim on the Main: three moorings and the old town
Wertheim on the Main: Mainkai, Alter Kran, and Viking Steiger; the old town at the confluence with the Tauber; and the railway station, ZOB, and travel connections.
Three moorings on the Main
Wertheim lies at the confluence of the Main and Tauber rivers. The official tourism information lists three separate landing points for river cruise ships on the left bank of the Main: Mainkai, Alter Kran, and Viking Steiger. The coordinates help identify the respective sections of the riverbank:
- Mainkai: 49.762700° N, 9.514808° E
- Alter Kran: 49.761303° N, 9.517533° E
- Viking Steiger: 49.761917° N, 9.528457° E
The specific landing point depends on the travel documents. Mainkai and Alter Kran are in the western part of Wertheim’s Main riverfront; all three names refer to separate arrival points.
From the riverbank to the old town
The rivers provide clear landmarks for understanding the town’s layout. The Tauber flows into the Main from the south. The historic center, including the market square, lies south of the Main and east of the Tauber. Mainkai is near the confluence, northwest of the center; Alter Kran lies farther southeast along the Main, but remains north of the town center. Viking Steiger is farther east still and slightly north of Alter Kran. This makes it easy to distinguish the order of the moorings along the river from their position relative to the old town.
The railway station is west of the Tauber and northwest of the market square. The central bus station is directly north of the railway station. Both transport hubs are therefore on the opposite side of the Tauber from the historic old town. The official travel information lists Wertheim as a rail destination and the ZOB as the destination for local bus services; Frankfurt is named as the region’s international arrival airport.
The long-distance bus stop Wertheim Village is a separate location, not the central ZOB north of the railway station. This distinction identifies the local bus hub and the more distant long-distance bus stop as two different arrival points.
Wertheim on a Main river cruise
Wertheim combines several separate ship moorings with an old town at the confluence of two rivers. To compare other stops on the Main, see the profiles for Frankfurt am Main and Würzburg. The overview of ports in Germany shows additional river and seaports in the national context.
