Hamburg Cruise Days
The Hamburg Cruise Days is a festival that puts cruise ships and cruising at the heart of Hamburg’s harbor. Ships in the harbor, a Cruise Parade and events on land come together in a program that differs from the broader maritime mix of the Hamburg Port Anniversary. Blue Port may be part of the event, but it is a separate light-art installation, not the name of the festival.
Cruising takes center stage in the harbor
The ships define the event both at the quayside and on the Elbe. The city’s tourism website describes the Cruise Parade as a procession of several large cruise ships and cites AIDAprima, Mein Schiff 3, MS EUROPA and MSC Preziosa among the ships featured in previous editions.
For the 12–14 September 2025 edition, the city listed AIDAperla, AIDAsol, EUROPA, Mein Schiff 4, MSC Preziosa, Norwegian Dawn and VASCO DA GAMA among the participating ships.
Visitors can view the ships from waterfront areas and vantage points. A cruise terminal is different: it comprises the passenger facilities used for check-in and processing. The terms terminal, quay, pier and berth also distinguish the terminal building from the waterfront structure and the specific position occupied by a ship.
Blue Port is a separate light-art project
Blue Port Hamburg transforms the harbor front into a light installation with blue illumination. Light artist Michael Batz introduced the concept in 2008, at the first Hamburg Cruise Days. Buildings, bridges, ships and other structures along the harbor edge can be illuminated. The organizers explain that the objects are lit up one after another. This artistic project creates a distinctive image of the harbor, while the parade and festival program put cruise ships and events in the spotlight.
One festival, two time periods
The 2025 edition illustrates the distinction: the city dated the Hamburg Cruise Days from 12 to 14 September. The official Blue Port website announced the first evening of illumination for 10 September and described the “Blue Port Art” installation as running through Sunday, 21 September. The harbor lights therefore remained on beyond the festival weekend. For the same year, the organizers’ website marked Blue Port’s tenth return.
