SAiL Bremerhaven: International Tall Ship Gathering

SAiL Bremerhaven is an international gathering of large sailing ships and their crews. For five days, tall ships, maritime encounters and events on and beside the water take centre stage. The most recent edition took place from 13 to 17 August 2025; the next SAiL is scheduled for 14 to 18 August 2030. This sets the gathering apart from an annual harbour festival: tall ships visit Bremerhaven at longer intervals, transforming the cityscape along the quays when they do.

Tall ships and sailing traditions

SAiL brings the experience of large sailing ships in port within easy reach. For the 2025 edition, organisers announced open ships, a parade of arrivals and more than 100 opportunities to sail on the Weser. These activities combine the sight of the ships with the chance to meet people on board and sail on the water. The tall-ship gathering also thrives on its international crews: ships and sailors from different countries bring together a variety of maritime traditions.

The 2025 programme announcement paired sailing ships with open-air concerts on land and on the water. A street-food festival and an electronic music festival were also announced. A procession of trainees and crew members was set to bring the maritime programme into the city centre. SAiL was therefore more than a ship parade: it offered a range of experiences centred on tall ships, music and international encounters.

Bremerhaven and the international crews

The city describes the international tall ships and their crews as the heart of SAiL. The gathering brings the ships along the quays into the public realm and connects them with the city’s harbour life. Visitors can experience sailing traditions, from seeing the ships on land to joining a voyage on the Weser. Bremerhaven is one of Germany’s cruise destinations; a stay before or after a cruise can be combined with the festival. On themed cruises, a shared interest provides the framework for the travel programme.

Edition and programme

According to a later report, the five-day SAiL 2025 drew more than 1.3 million people to and along the water. Alongside the tall ships, the city highlights international encounters and the special camaraderie on the water and along the quays. SAiL takes place every five years. The 2020 edition was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, leaving a ten-year gap between the 2015 and 2025 editions. Concerts and group events also complement time on the water, including onboard entertainment with music and shows.
