Hamburg Port Anniversary

The HAMBURG PORT ANNIVERSARY brings together ships on the Elbe and activities at several waterfront locations. The water and land programmes, ship parades and open ships are recurring features of the harbour festival. The 822nd edition, in May 2011, shows how cruise ships and historic vessels became part of the festivities: the Queen Mary 2 arrived in Hamburg and departed again on the final day.

Ships and activities on the water

Highlights include arrival and departure parades, as well as the tugboat ballet. The organisers’ website also describes Open Ship events aboard participating tall ships, museum ships and historic vessels. The 2011 edition offered a wide variety: a contemporary overview of ships listed museum ships, sailing vessels, launches, naval vessels and cruise ships at various berths. On 8 May, the Queen Mary 2 was berthed at the Hamburg Cruise Center HafenCity; PHOENIX announced a broadcast that day of her farewell and departure in the parade. The berth is part of the Port of Hamburg.

Several harbour locations and the land programme

The festival spans different parts of the harbour. The official 2026 overview describes historic ships, maritime crafts and hands-on activities at the Oevelgönne Museum Harbour. At the Sandtorhafen Traditional Ship Harbour, open decks and opportunities to meet people aboard the ships are part of the programme. For the Hansahafen and Bremer Kai, the organisers’ website lists Open Ship events, historic vessels, a land programme and the involvement of the German Harbour Museum. These examples show how visitors can move between ships, harbour locations and activities on land.

For 8 May 2011, PHOENIX announced four hours of live coverage from the Landungsbrücken. The press release listed shanty choirs, the arrival parade, the tugboat ballet and the departure parade. The announced programme brought together ship movements on the Elbe with music and reports on harbour life at the Landungsbrücken.

A harbour festival with a changing line-up

The ships and event locations vary from one edition to the next. In 2011, the line-up ranged from historic sailing ships and steam tugs to the Queen Mary 2; the organisers’ 2026 overview described open decks and hands-on activities in several parts of the harbour. Cruise ships are one part of the festival’s broader variety of vessels. The water programme, harbour locations and activities on land together create the character of the Hamburg Port Anniversary.
