Maritime Days Bremerhaven: Harbour Festival and Ships on the Weser
Maritime Days turn the New Harbour in Bremerhaven into a meeting place for ships, seafarers and a festival on shore. The 2026 edition was scheduled for 12 to 16 August. Open Ship and day trips offer different ways to experience the maritime programme: the former invites visitors aboard participating ships, while the latter takes them out onto the Weser. On stage, shanty choirs and rock and pop bands bring music to the harbour festival; food and shared celebrations round out its nautical theme.
Ships and Open Ship
The programme includes Open Ship events, meaning open ship visits, and day trips departing from and returning to Bremerhaven. It therefore appeals not only to people who want to view ships from the quay: going aboard and travelling on the water offer different perspectives. The ships taking part vary by edition; the format itself makes encounters with seafaring the heart of the harbour festival.
An Open Ship event gives visitors the chance to go aboard and talk with seafarers. A day trip, by contrast, takes them beyond the harbour entrance and shows the seaside city from the water. These experiences complement one another but are not interchangeable: one offers a glimpse of life aboard a ship, while the other provides the experience of a voyage. As one of Germany’s cruise destinations, Bremerhaven combines harbour life with the option of a stay before or after a cruise.
Around the New Harbour
Around the New Harbour, the ships and festival are brought together in one area. Shanty choirs and rock and pop bands perform on stage, while food and shared celebrations complement the concerts. Alongside the visits aboard the ships, this creates a distinct programme on land. The combination of harbour basin, ships and stages also makes the festival appealing to groups whose members may not all want to see the same ships or take the same trips. Music also plays a role in onboard entertainment, shows and live music. On themed cruises, a shared interest becomes the focus of the travel programme.
The 2026 edition also showed how a harbour festival can adapt to local conditions. Because historic swing bridges were closed, the event area was concentrated around the New Harbour, with a loop around the harbour basin, and the schedule was adjusted as well. The city announced that the planned fireworks display was cancelled for safety reasons. For this edition, the city announced that events would end at 10 p.m., and at 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Ships and food at the 2026 edition
Among the ships announced for 2026 were the Spanish vessels “Nao Victoria” and “Pascual Flores”, as well as “Dar Mlodziezy”. The street food festival in the former Lloyd Dock added a culinary dimension to the ship visits. Electronic music featured at the Neus Festival on Schleusenstraße, with a dedicated stage planned at the northern end of the New Harbour.
