Restaurants and Dining Options on Board

Dining on board varies by restaurant, service style, and meal-time format. A buffet lets guests choose for themselves from the food on offer, while a full-service restaurant serves meals at the table. With fixed sittings, dining times are set in advance; flexible options may allow changing reservations or open seating. Which options are included in the cruise fare, and whether a reservation is advisable, depends on the cruise line and the specific restaurant.

Buffet or full-service restaurant

Buffets are designed for self-service. In a full-service restaurant, guests choose from a menu or set menu and are served at the table. This does not automatically mean that drinks, special dishes, or every restaurant are included in the fare. The terms of the booked fare and the information provided by each restaurant determine what is included. For an overview of the distinction between included services and possible extras, see the article Onboard services and extras.

Fixed sittings or flexible dining times

Dining options can vary within the same fleet. Princess Cruises describes three options for its main dining rooms: traditional early or late sittings, flexible reservation times that can be changed, and “Walk-in Anytime” open seating. According to the cruise line, reservation times depend on capacity and availability. This is a specific example, not a general standard for cruise ships.

Consider specialty restaurants separately

A specialty restaurant may offer a different cuisine or a special menu. However, its name alone does not indicate whether an extra charge applies. Princess notes that specialty restaurants may incur an additional fee; terms may vary depending on the offer or booked package. Whether a restaurant is included in a package should therefore be assessed against the fare terms that apply to the specific trip.

What to keep in mind before your trip

Four differences are especially useful when planning your day: the type of service, whether dining times are fixed or flexible, the availability of reservations, and what is included in the fare. Princess’s official information lists several dining options and notes that reservations depend on capacity and availability. Offer details may change, so the cruise line’s information for your specific trip takes precedence.
