Making the most of sea days

A sea day has no port call to set the pace. It gives you time to get to know the ship at your leisure, relax, or plan activities without the time pressure of a day in port. The number of activities on offer and which areas are available depend on the ship and the day’s schedule.

Set a relaxed framework for the day

One or two fixed plans can give the day some structure, such as exercising in the morning and meeting up for an evening event. The rest of the time is left open for breaks and spontaneous decisions. Mein Schiff recommends booking popular spa treatments and specialty restaurants in advance.

The daily programme brings together the events and times for that day. This makes it easy to fit an event you want to attend around meals and periods of rest, without planning out the entire day in advance. If there are several sea days, each can have a different focus: one with more activities, another with longer breaks.

Time for onboard spaces and new interests

A sea day is a good opportunity to enjoy spaces and activities that there is less time for on port days. Mein Schiff’s guide mentions options such as the pool, sports, workshops and talks, shows and wellness facilities. Even during the day, the options depend on the programme and availability.

A quiet spot with a view, a visit to a lounge or time on the sun deck can be just as fitting for a sea day as a class or a performance. Leaving some free time between activities means you can stay longer or change your plans on the spur of the moment.

Don’t turn relaxation into another item on the schedule

A sea day doesn’t have to be packed with activities. Enjoying a leisurely meal, reading, looking out at the sea or spending time in your cabin are all ways to spend the day in their own right. Free time between planned activities leaves room to unwind.

Keep to your own rhythm

If you’re travelling together, you can choose a meal or an evening activity as a time to meet up, while spending the rest of the day in different ways. This gives everyone the chance to pursue their own interests while still setting aside time together. That way, a sea day can be active, relaxing or a mix of both.
