Smoking on Board

Smoking is permitted on private balconies on AIDA and Costa ships, while cabin balconies are smoke-free on MSC, Disney Cruise Line and Cunard ships. Separate cruise-line rules apply to e-cigarettes. Rules as of October 22, 2026.

AIDA

AIDA lists cabins and indoor public areas as non-smoking areas. Smoking—including e-cigarettes—is permitted on your own cabin balcony and in designated areas on the open decks.

Mein Schiff

TUI Cruises’ FAQ lists designated private balconies and verandas, as well as other marked areas, as places where smoking is allowed. Some balconies are explicitly designated as non-smoking areas; the current FAQ lists indoor and outdoor locations by ship. On Mein Schiff 3, these include a smoking lounge on Deck 5, where TUI Cruises also offers cigars from its humidor in the evenings.

Disney Cruise Line

Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is permitted only in designated areas on each ship. Cabins and private verandas are smoke-free. The permitted deck areas vary by ship; Disney’s FAQ lists them for each vessel.

Cunard

Smoking and vaping are prohibited in cabins, on balconies and in public areas outside designated smoking areas. Each ship has marked outdoor smoking areas; Churchill’s Cigar Lounge is reserved for cigar and pipe smokers. E-cigarettes and vaporizers may be used only in designated smoking areas.

Seabourn

On Seabourn ships, tobacco smoking is prohibited in guest suites and on verandas or balconies; cigarettes are permitted in designated outdoor areas. Locations for cigars and pipes vary by ship: on Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, smoking is permitted on the starboard side of the open Sky Bar deck. According to the current FAQ, e-cigarettes are permitted in guest suites.

MSC Cruises and Costa

MSC prohibits all forms of smoking in cabins and on cabin balconies; smoking is allowed in marked smoking areas. The FAQ includes electronic cigarettes in this rule.

Costa does not allow cigarettes, cigars or pipes in indoor public areas. Smoking is permitted in designated areas with ashtrays on the open decks; tobacco smoking is prohibited in cabins but allowed outdoors on private balconies. According to Costa’s FAQ, e-cigarettes are permitted only in your own cabin.

Finding smoking areas on board

The specific locations vary by cruise line, ship and deck. Mein Schiff lists the areas in its digital onboard system; additional smoking areas are marked on board. Cigarettes and tobacco products must be fully extinguished in the ashtrays provided and must never be thrown overboard. The MSC Cruises onboard rules explain the relevant policies, including the rules for e-cigarettes.

How the rules changed in 2013/14

Disney Cruise Line banned smoking on cabin verandas starting November 15, 2013. Cunard also introduced a ban on private balconies in 2014, after its three ships’ world voyages. Seabourn phased out smoking in cabins starting in February 2014: first on Seabourn Spirit, Seabourn Pride and Seabourn Legend, then on Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Quest and Seabourn Sojourn. At the time, balcony rules continued to vary by ship and suite category.
